roosters, beaches and a bride

Author: angiem, 01 14th, 2010

I spent a quarter of my waking hours in Kauai chasing roosters, just so I could snap a picture of them. They run rampant all over the island, crowing at all hours of the day and night, their internal clocks haywire.  For all their cheeky behavior, they are quite shy, or maybe just terrified of the high pitched squeals of the children chasing them, yet I did get them in the end.

This trip to Hawaii was for my baby sister’s wedding.  She is unbelievably beautiful to begin with, so you can be sure she made a stunning bride.  The wedding was on the beach, as all weddings in Hawaii ought to be.  We were walking around barefoot, digging our toes in the golden sand, laughing and crying, and hugging each other.  My daughter and my niece had the time of their lives being flower girls.  I watched them remembering how I used to wish I had been a flower girl as a child.

I missed my blogging pals and can’t wait to catch up with all of you!  The internet connection was terrible, though.  Which isn’t all that bad, I suppose, as I had ample opportunities to watch the violet tinted sunrise on my early morning walks through the enchanted forest, coffee in hand.

The bright, cloudless days, I dozed away on the beach, smeared in a thick layer of sunblock, yet still somehow managing to get a burn, while the kids played in the sand and the water.  As the sun set and the skies quickly darkened, we gathered around an outside table and had dinner and conversation by flickering firelight in torches and candles, dreading our return to the cold, damp Northwest.  Still, we are highly grateful for a chance to warm up our bones, and the lovely reminder that summer is coming.

A lovely, blessed week to all of you!

We missed you! I love Hawaii. We usually go to Maui. We went to Kauai on our honeymoon and I remember the roosters and I remember a lot of cars/trucks pulled over on the side of the road and left…being covered by trees, vines, plants.

What a lovely place for a wedding. BEAUTIFUL photos!

    Glad you are back.

My little brother is going to get married in the fall. At first they were going to have the wedding in Wisconsin. Now I hear they’re thinking Boston. Wonder if I could talk them into Hawaii? Your description is VERY appealing!
I’m so glad you had a wonderful time.
Your thing with the roosters reminded me of a trip I took to Florida. There were little lizards EVERYWHERE and I so wanted to catch one to bring home for Joshua. But I knew the air pressure changes in the airplane wouldn’t be good for those little guys. So I tried for pictures instead.
Um, they didn’t like posing for the camera. *sigh*

Glad you’re back. It’s good to hear from you!

  15. Bethany Says:

    Wow, sounds dreamy. Great photos!
    Thanks for chasing those roosters!

What a glorious place for a wedding. On the beach in January! A blessing indeed.

Thank you so much for your kind words about my story. It was a wee bit spooky to enter, but I am happy that I did. Your encouragement means a lot.

I am currently working on your sweet daughter’s box and having so much fun doing so. I was fortunate to find a ballerina to feature on top and I think she’ll be pleased. I love seeing photographs of her here. I can picture who the box is for! I’ll keep you posted.

  24. materfamilias Says:

and it’s so dark and wet in the Northwest right now! At least you’ve stored up some sunshine, emotionally and physically, so that perhaps you can recall that feeling in the grey Northwest rain . . .

  25. corine Says:

A wedding on kauai, my favorite place on earth…. dreamy!

  26. SJ Says:

Your pictures are fantastic! And that girl seems like heaven defined–lucky you to have her! And lucky her, as well.

  27. Francesca Says:

I went to the beach yesterday: there was a spectacular storm, the sea was dark blue and gray, the clouds were black, and the mist from the fierce waves was thick and almost orange. I was wearing boots and a parka. I thought of my toes in that sand in summertime and longed for it. Still, it was beautiful: I love the beach and the sea in all seasons. As a little girl, I would have like to wear a white dress and be a flower girl on a sandy beach!

  28. elizabeth Says:

Such beautiful pictures! I’ve only been to Hawaii once for only a couple of days but remembered it as spectacular. Summer is coming already?

  29. Renee Khan Says:

The little Miss is so cute!

“Walks through the enchanted forest, coffee in hand” …who cares about the Internet if you’ve got that… No, but seriously, I totally understand what you mean - the Internet community of friends has become an important part of our lives. We’re are modern day gal pals, and who wouldn’t miss their close friends. We share a passion and we are there for each other. That said, we can and should also go out and “into the real world” and then come back again…

So I’m glad you had this lovely little getaway and I’m even more glad to have you back. I wondered how you were and what you had been up to… Sweet things, I see.

    Have a blessed Friday!
