ant thoughts

Author: angiem, 06 22nd, 2011

I’ve been killing ants today. I don’t know where they come from, but there they are, carrying their little germs on a zig-zagged route across my counters. The sight of them alone makes me itch. I did the right thing yesterday and tried to scare them away with ground pepper, but when they were still around this morning, I went in for the kill.

My city’s built on a giant ant hill. That’s what I believe. Sometimes I imagine their kingdom of miles of vast tunnels underground, and the ants, billions and billions of them, going about their business plotting which house to attack next. It used to be that I wouldn’t go to bed until the kitchen was spotless, hoping that the smell of disinfected surfaces and waxed floors would deter the little pests, but it was a battle I was losing, so I gave it up. Besides, it was exhausting.

And my attitude sucked. I was so smug. Acting like a know-it-all, just because my house was organized. I blamed a bunch of people, because it made me feel in control. The reason the ants came back was the lone paper towel someone used to wipe their hands and left on the counter. Wasn’t it? No? Of course not! I know better now.

As you can all probably tell, I have nothing of importance to say. Well. Perhaps next time. But, thanks so much for reading my posts, clueless as they are.

Oh, ants. I went through a hideous ant summer two summers ago. Apparently I sent shrieking (but hilarious,I am told) emails to friends about it. I’ll try to find them. I spent ages researching ways to foil the suckers. I couldn’t do much because I’m in an apt. bldg. But there are things to do just outside the walls of a house.

I always read your posts. You don’t need to apologize - we get it from the tag:)

Lol!!! You crack me up! You sure could write horror if you wanted. I’m itching like crazy!!

We get the tiny black sugar ants in our kitchen and I think they come in search of water because it is so dry. For some reason, they do not bother me so much. I have some “natural” spray I use if they become too numerous for me to ignore. But we have so many bugs that I can hardly get upset about ants. I can’t even begin to tell you….
    Ah. Florida.

  4. Diane Says:

I think for me its a control thing. I like to have my own little world in order and when something like this happens, I realize how little control I really do have. Hugs mighty ant killer! :O)

  5. Stephanie @ La Dolce Vita Says:

I hate them too! every spring they come back, and every spring we put the stuff outside so they don’t come in … I hate to use chemicals, but it was them or me! Hope all’s well!

  6. Mwa (Lost in Translation) Says:

Oh no! I’d never considered the germs on the ants!

I feel for you. That is a bad pest to have…

If you’re looking for a bench to wash, smugly as you wish, I can offer you mine. I suffer from no such desire to have everything waxed and disinfected. They get that once a week. The rest of the time they wiped. Sigh - ants are an inevitable part of my summer ;-)

I find that ants are more active when there’s been rain, or new construction, or some foundation settling. In our old 1926 house, which has settled as much as it probably will until the next earthquake, we’ve not seen ants in 7 years.

    Hi Dear Angie
Well if ants were the worst of my bug problems I’d be happy… in fact i have zillions of ants here and they don’t seem to bother me.. [in comparison to other bugs].. Life is weird we always find something to worry about.. I like your brutal self honesty.. your willingness to admit that your need for control led you to blame others. hehehe.. watch out ants!!!

Oh.. I like the imagery also.. the enormous ant hill with miles of underground tunnels.. I can envision this hidden world through your words.. I can see the Commander Ants.. gathering in the ‘war room’ plotting their strategies with oversized maps laid out upon the war table.. Perhaps they have espionage ants they send out on reconnaissance missions to determine which homes are using pesticide and to be avoided until the chips are down. haha Perhaps my flu is getting to me..

Have a lovely weekend.. ciao xxx Julie

I usually get ants when the weather changes and they are sugar ants. I heard that ants are clean because they constantly disinfect their bodies with some fluid thats found in their saliva.

  11. Francesca Says:

i “love” all insects, as long as they stay out of my house. for ants, try plain and simple talcum powder on the point of entry (if you find it …). Ciao!

  12. joyce Says:

Oh those pesty ants. We are getting the big black carpenter ants wanting to make our home theirs. I love animals, but not a insect gal. xo

I was thinking about you Angie! Even when you write about ants I like your style. Outside cornmeal works great to rid ant hills.

Your post below is right on. Family and friends, good health, are the important things!!

    Love to you!
    Constance

Lets do a book. You write the tales, I’ll illustrate.

  14. Jessica Says:

We have carpenter ants too. Blech. We live in the woods so we also get spiders. When I only had one son my house was spotless. Now…not so much. LOL

  15. audrey Says:

hey Angie, it’s been so long, I miss you! I haven’t been writing, and have not been around much, but I miss you and hope all is well.

… On ants, I’m a bit of a scary cat when it comes to any and all bugs… I lose my mind. I hope you are finding solutions for the ants. With most bugs it has very little to do with cleanliness. It’s just that they need a place to be as well, but we would prefer it not be in our homes:)…

    sending lots of love!
    audrey

You always have something to say… You have your voice. What you say matters. We love you. Just the way you are.

I’m doing just great… planning a big move… from one continent to another;)

  19. Christie Says:

Pesky ants! I do not like them at all.
I have tried the same…keep the kitchen spotless, they still come back. I alway end up killing them too, although, I must admit I feel a little guilty afterwards. I usually make myself feel better with thoughts of ‘defending my teritory’ haha. Ants will forever invade, I’m sure of it.

    xoxo

    Hi Angie
You can even make ants sound interesting!
Hope you are having a wonderful summer :)
